LOCAL AMENITIES

In this sun-drenched corner of the south of France, you'll find sandy beaches lapped by the Mediterranean sea, wild open spaces in the Cevennes hills, monasteries and castles for Languedoc sightseeing and vineyards where you can taste some of the best Languedoc wines around.

The department of Herault covers around 6200m2 and has a population of around 90,000 people who mainly live in Montpellier, Sete and the town of Beziers - three very different places, each with its own character and charm.

Bordering the Mediterranean is about 60 miles of coastline, which stretches between the hauntingly beautiful region known as the Camargue and the tree-lined Canal du Midi.

Agde, mid way between the towns of Sete and Beziers, is a charming place to spend your holiday, with its warm climate turning it into a sunbathers paradise, particularly in Cap d´Agde where naturists have their own beach.

As one of the main towns in the Languedoc, the town of Beziers is primarily famous for its bullfights, rugby, and wine from the vineyards of the surrounding area, although it has several other points of interest.

The Allees Paul Riquet, in the heart of the town of Beziers, is a broad tree lined esplanade with shops along one side and a multitude of bars, cafes and restaurants along the other.

Often the site for seasonal markets and festivities, there is always something to see along the Allees. Every Friday you will find the Allees hosting the town of Beziers flower market, while the first Saturday of each month it plays host to an antique market.

Montpellier is one of the liveliest cities in the south of France, and the capital of the Languedoc Roussillon.

The centre of activity is the Place de la Comedie, known locally as "L'Oeuf" (the egg) with buzzing bars and cafes offering hundreds of tables and chairs all perfectly positioned for an afternoon or evening of people watching.

The medieval city of Carcassonne, one of Aude's most popular historic landmarks, has been restored to much of its medieval glory while the town of Narbonne attracts many tourists to its Roman ruins.
